Department Overview:
The Critical Care Medicine Department at Tawam Hospital in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine plays a pivotal role in the provision of the highest standard of care available internationally by means of continuous quality improvement, benefiting patients from all over the Emirates. All the senior consultants in our Department are American Board Certified in Critical Care Medicine, having completed competitive, demanding training programs and rigorous certification examinations.
The Critical Care Medicine Department consists of 20 ICU beds, 6 PICU beds, 6 HDU beds and 8 CCU beds. All our consultants are American Board in Critical Care Medicine having completed competitive, demanding training programs and rigorous certification examinations.
Our ICU is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, making it one of the most up-to-date ICUs in the Emirates, as well as in the
Middle East. Protocols and practices to reduce resource utilization are promoted which includes protocol for sedation, associated with significant reduction in ICU length of stay, timing of tracheostomy and performing percutaneous tracheostomies.

The Critical Care Medicine Department has excellent academic programs with the following CMEs.
CME Lecture to ICU medical, nursing and respiratory staff held twice a month.
CME Lecture to all medical staff in the hospital held monthly in coordination with the Academic Affairs Department.
CME Lecture to the GAHS hospitals within the Emirates of Abu Dhabi
The Critical Care Medicine Department has strong affiliation with the UAE University. The Critical Care Fellowship Program has recently been approved by the UAE University which will be the first of any kind in the UAE.
The department has rotating residents from other disciplines and the department aims to provide them a formal instruction, clinical experience and competency in a wide range of critical care medicine, technical and procedural skills.

Scope of Services:
The Critical Care Medicine Department renders services to all patients admitted to Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit from Emergency Department, Operating Room, Wards and transfers from other hospitals. It provides care to a wide variety of patients including medical, surgical and trauma and fulfills the expectation of each patient. The multidisciplinary team consists of experienced and dedicated support staff that specializes in critical care medicine. It delivers critical care services with joint rounds by physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and others.
