Department of Nephrology
Department Overview:
The nephrology service started in Tawam in the late 80’s and has seen continuous expotential growth since the mid 90’s. This is due to an increase in the population of Al-Ain but most importantly to the diabetes endemic which is the #1 cause of renal failure. The witnessed rate of increase in dialysis patient volume at Tawam has been in the range of 20% annually over the last 5 years. Moreover, it is anticipated that the need for Renal Replacement Therapy will continue this exponential growth within the next decade. The service has been recently transformed into a full fledged-department in line with the administration’s vision of establishing a “Center of Excellence” in renal care, in addition to expansion of the spectrum of renal replacement services.
