Department Overview:
The Oncology Department consists of four divisions: Oncology, Hematology, Radiotherapy and Palliative Care.
The number of beds within our department is 39 beds in the SMU1 and SMU2.
There are also 32 bed sit flats on campus to accommodate those patients who have to travel long distances for ongoing daily outpatient treatment .
Outpatients are seen at the Radiotherapy building at the new oncology clinic and infusion center
The clinics are highly specialized and offer counseling, diagnostic work-up, planning of radiotherapy, chemotherapy treatment and transfusion of blood products.
Divisions:
- Hematology/Oncology Division
The divisions of hematology and oncology currently offer diagnostic workup and treatment for:
1-Benign disorders:
- Sickle Cell Anemia
- Thalassemia
- Deficiencies e.g. Fe++
- Thrombophilia
- Haemophilia
- Platelet disorders
- Pregnancy related hematological problems
- Aplastic anaemia
- TTP/HUS
2- Malignant disorders:
- All types of solid tumours and malignant haematological disorders

- Radiotherapy Division
The division of Radiotherapy opened in 1996 and plays a major role in the management of patients with malignant diseases in the UAE.
We offer a wide range of standard radiotherapy techniques for different sites which may be used with chemotherapy concomitantly or sequentially. Conformal radiotherapy, high dose rate brachytherapy and Iodine 131 therapy for thyroid malignancies are also available.
- Palliative Care Division
Palliative Care is an active, holistic care of patients with advanced, progressive disease. The aim of the palliative care team is to provide relief from pain and other distressing symptoms that the cancer patients suffer in the advancing stage of their disease.
The oncology department introduced a palliative care service in January 2007 and provide inpatient, outpatient and home care.
