Emails Analysis & Library Final
Proposal for 2009
17 November 2008
Purpose of the library query for “Core Clinical Journals”
-
Obtain comprehensive journal titles which is a must list for
any small/big library according to the National Library
of Medicine standards.
-
Create equivalence between the number of journals received
and their quality taking into consideration the space
limitation.
|
No point in receiving journals if they can’t be
shelved and obtained by library users when needed.
|
-
Identify user needs for future plan and action.
Issues raised from the query:
- Positive response for having
core journals in our library.
- Having the core journal in
electronic format.
- High demand toward moving to
online/electronic resources.
- The core list is missing for
key specialty journals.
- Having access to Johns
Hopkins Library for more comprehensive collection.

Answers for the issues raised from the
Query:
- Positive response for
having core journals in our library.
Tawam Library will consider going for the core journals
titles and it will keep the non core that was requested by
the departments and already in our collection.
- Having the core journal
in electronic format.
a. One of the NLM standards is to have the core list in
print even if it’s available online.
b. Given the current situation for space limitation,
whatever journal that is currently available on line through
HAAD e-library we will not obtain it on print.
Accordingly, we deducted 39 titles from the core print journals
since they are available at HAAD e-library.
c. At this point there is no one ready e-resource
that has most of the core medical journals online at one Gate.
Most of the journals are scattered at different e-resources such
as; MDConust,AccessMedicine, BMJ, Springer, OVID…ect...
d. High cost. Individual subscription to single
e-journals will increase the cost 2-3 times comparing to the
cost of print subscription.
- High demand toward moving
to online/electronic resources.
Our aim is to go for electronic resources
whenever it is possible taking into consideration
Cost/Quality factor whether its through HAAD, Tawam Hospital
or Johns Hopkins.
- The core list is missing
some key specialty journals.
Giving the fact that we have limited space, we
can’t obtain any extra new journal in print format.
Any journals articles that are not available in our
collection, we will get it through Request Articles.
it is a service provided by the library to obtain articles
that are not part of our collection from other libraries in
the Middle East.
- Having access to Johns
Hopkins Library for more comprehensive collection.
We will again consider this option and will try the
possibility to negotiate a way to have access to JH library
even if it’s at a library level as a start.

Future options/choices for 2009:
Options
|
Advantages
|
Disadvantages / Difficulties
|
| 1. Consider the Core journals list by canceling the titles that are non-core and subscribing to the core print journals.
|
1. It’s a must list in any hospital library.
2. Covers all the major specialties in medicine.
3. Allow us to cancel the journals that are second priority and keep only the top priority journals.
4. Cut cost.
|
1. Space limitations.
|
|
1. Renew the current subscriptions (187 titles)
|
1. Only 34 titles are considered to be core titles and the rest are based on individual interest.
|
1. It’s not a complete core list.
2. Doesn’t cover all the major specialties in medicine.
3. High cost
3. Space limitations.
|
Please send your valuable thoughts/choices no later than Wednesday, 15 October, to Shamsa Al Ghafli, Sr. Officer, Library Services.
Please Note: The process for quotations takes from 6 to 8 weeks and the payment should be made to the publishers by January to reserve our issues.
